Faster, Stronger, and Funnier: Lessons from China’s Robot Games

 

With robots suffering spectacular mechanical failures, delivering enough hilarious falls to rival a Buster Keaton film, and occasionally displaying surprisingly aggressive behavior, the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing captured global attention this week. The event left audiences with a strange combination of amusement, anxiety, and relief.

The five-day event highlighted China’s ambition to establish itself as the world’s leading force in humanoid robotics. The competition featured android fighters delivering powerful roundhouse kicks, while robot teams entered the arena alongside flag-waving captains riding enormous robotic dogs. The headline 100m sprint provided one of the most memorable moments, as several robots reportedly ran faster than Usain Bolt’s record pace before crashing into a padded barrier, sending sparks, flames and pieces of machinery flying.


The 10-second video, which quickly became ideal content for the games’ international online audience, demonstrated what experts from around the world called China’s “staggering” advances in engineering. At the same time, the robots’ spectacular breakdowns offered some reassurance that these machines may still be far from becoming powerful enough to dominate humanity.

“Ready for another big day of failure,” read one typical comment filled with schadenfreude, reflecting the reaction of millions of viewers who followed viral clips and livestreams of events ranging from boxing to breakdancing. Throughout the competitions, the humanoid robots alternated between impressive displays of ruthless efficiency and amusingly clumsy failures.

Some viewers were surprised to find themselves feeling sympathy for the robots. One person captioned a clip of a robot struggling through the 400m obstacle race with the words, “after drinking four bottles of wine at 2 a.m.” Another admitted that watching the robots compete in weightlifting was “far more emotional than I expected,” as the machines struggled to accomplish their athletic goals.


If the competition had an official slogan, it could easily be “faster, higher, funnier.” The obstacle course, where humanoid robots crawled beneath nets, climbed stairs, and crossed stepping stones, reminded comedian Charlie Higson of Monty Python’s “Upper Class Twit of the Year” sketch. He joked that the event was only missing a few of the sketch’s most absurd moments. Higson returned the following day, commenting that the robots were getting “better and better” as a cheerleading machine with sparkling pom-poms stumbled and flailed around uncontrollably.

However, the games were about much more than entertainment. With more than 2,000 humanoid robots developed by over 660 mainly Chinese technology companies, the event served as a powerful display of China’s growing strength in robotics. It came just weeks before Chinese President Xi Jinping was expected to travel to Washington, DC, for talks with Donald Trump, with the competition for technological dominance between the two countries likely to be a major topic.

The event also took place shortly after Trump prohibited imports of Chinese humanoid robots and four-legged robotic dogs, pointing to cybersecurity and national security concerns. At the same time, the games provided Chinese manufacturers with an opportunity to promote their robots internationally, particularly as American competitors prepare to introduce their own products, including Elon Musk’s long-awaited Optimus humanoid robot, which was reportedly entering production.

China’s position in the global robotics industry is particularly strong. According to the Mercator Institute for Chinese Studies, the country produced around 12,800 humanoid robots last year, representing roughly 90% of global production. This dominant position may have given Chinese companies the confidence to openly showcase the robots’ frequent and sometimes amusing failures, something that surprised some international observers.
