 In 2019, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a bold promise that would redefine the company's approach to privacy.

"The future is private," Zuckerberg declared, unveiling a vision in which private communications would become the cornerstone of the company's services. At the center of that vision was end-to-end encryption (E2EE), a technology designed to ensure that only the sender and recipient of a message can read its contents.

At the time, end-to-end encryption was already available on WhatsApp, but Zuckerberg pledged to expand it across Facebook Messenger and Instagram, positioning privacy as the next chapter of the social media giant's evolution.

Seven years later, however, that vision appears to have changed dramatically.
