I Replied to a WhatsApp Message by Writing on a Table. Are Smart Glasses Finally Ready for Takeoff?

 We have been promised a future of smart glasses for nearly a decade. From Google Glass to a graveyard of failed startups, the dream has always been just over the horizon. But every year, the glasses remain on the shelf, and the phone stays in our hand.

Could 2026 finally be the year that changes?

After testing the latest Meta Display Glasses—specifically a new feature that lets you write a text message on a table—it finally feels like we are approaching a tipping point. Not because the tech is flashy, but because it is finally getting out of the way.




The “Write on the Table” Moment

Let’s skip the spec sheet and get to the demo that actually made observers do a double take.

During a recent live test, a user received a WhatsApp message. Instead of pulling out a phone, yelling at a voice assistant in public, or awkwardly gesturing at the air, they simply placed their hand on a table and started writing.

With their finger acting as a pen on an imaginary piece of paper, they traced letters on the wooden surface. The glasses—specifically the display embedded in the right lens—transcribed the handwriting in real-time. The message appeared perfectly. No typos. No lag.

“You are very fast,” the observer noted. “And I have terrible handwriting.”

That is the magic trick. The system isn't reading your actual handwriting with a camera. It is using something far more sophisticated: Electromyography (EMG) .

How It Works: Reading Your Wrist, Not the Air

According to the team behind the glasses, sensors are built into the band (or frame) that pick up the electrical signals in your wrist. These signals control the subtle neuromuscular movements associated with gestures.

When you tap your thumb and index finger together, the glasses register a “click.” When you write the letter “A” on a table, the EMG sensors detect the unique electrical pattern your wrist makes when forming that letter.

The technical challenge was immense. “Everyone has such personal ways of writing,” explained a Meta representative. “We had to train the model to be able to successfully pick up what you’re writing even when you’re in a hurry, and in a different style from every single person.”

The result? You aren't typing on a tiny keyboard or dictating to a robot. You are simply writing—an act so natural that the tech disappears.

The Display: Bright, Private, and Out of the Way

Of course, you can't have smart glasses without a screen. But past attempts failed because the display was either too dim to see in sunlight, too low-resolution to read text, or so bright that everyone around you could see what you were looking at.

The new Meta glasses solve this with a projector that beams information directly into your peripheral vision (specifically the right eye). It is bright enough to read in direct sunlight but designed with a “light leak” prevention system so that no one else can see your notifications.

The UX is subtle. When you receive a message, the text hovers in your field of view without obstructing your actual vision. You can dismiss it with a pinch gesture, reply by writing on your palm or table, or ignore it entirely.

But Do We Want Constant Interruptions?

This is the philosophical question that plagues wearable tech. Do people really want notifications floating in their eyeballs 24/7?

The current thinking is surprisingly nuanced. The goal isn't constant interruption—it is presence.

“We internally talk about being present as the primary thing we want to help people do, yet connected,” the team explained. You can put your phone in your pocket during an important meeting, a movie, or dinner with family, and still know that urgent information can reach you without the social rudeness of checking a screen.

You can also disable the display entirely for notifications. The glasses become just glasses until you choose to engage.

The Privacy Elephant in the Room

For years, smart glasses have faced a major barrier: cameras. People are (rightly) uncomfortable with the idea that someone might be recording them without consent.

Meta has taken two concrete steps to address this:

  1. The Privacy LED: When you take a photo, the LED on the right side flashes once. When you take a video, it pulses continuously for the entire duration. There is no way to disable this light in software.

  2. Hardware Tampering: There is a light detector on the LED itself. If the system detects that the LED is covered (by tape, a sticker, or a finger), the camera simply refuses to work.

“It’s really important to us that not only do you like how the glasses look, but equally important is that the people around you feel comfortable,” the team stated. “Because if they don’t, you’re going to stop wearing them.”

The Fashion Hurdle

Uptake of smart glasses remains slow. And perhaps the biggest barrier is simple: convincing people they look good.

To solve this, Meta partnered with EssilorLuxottica—the company behind Ray-Ban and Oakley. The goal was stark: “Build a pair of glasses that are authentically a Ray-Ban.”

The current iteration succeeds here. To the untrained eye, they look like normal, stylish eyewear. The electronics are hidden. The display is invisible when off. You would never know someone was wearing “tech” until the LED pulses.

The Verdict: Are We There Yet?

Supply issues mean these glasses are currently only on sale in the US, with a global rollout delayed. But the demo units feel different from the clunky AR headsets of the past.

From playing a skiing game where movement controls the character, to live language translation, to a teleprompter mode for public speaking, the use cases are finally expanding beyond “tech demo” and into “actually useful.”

The argument for smart glasses is simple: wearables are the best AI form factor. They have context—where you are, what you’re seeing, what you’re hearing. And they are always on you.

As one executive put it: “The AI is going to get a lot better in this coming year. You should see a lot more coming from us.”

For the first time in a decade, that doesn't sound like wishful thinking. It sounds like a roadmap.

The bottom line: If you can reply to a text by scribbling on a table and forget you're even wearing a computer on your face, the future might finally have arrived.
